A Night to Support the Anti-Plastic Movement
Having spent the past year working remotely, Lot Sixteen employees have definitely missed each other.
As such, we try to schedule regular events for us all to get together, outside of work hours, and enjoy each others’ company. Last month, when an opportunity presented itself to support one of our clients, bring attention to an important cause and allow us to come together for a company-wide event, we couldn’t pass it up! We organized a casual gathering in Co-Founder Colin Hayes’ backyard, which allowed us to enjoy good drinks, food, and company while we watched the Plastic Pollution Coalition’s Magnificent May Virtual Concert. In keeping with the theme of the evening, our backyard event was also plastic-free. We used Ball Corporation’s 100% recyclable aluminum cups, served beverages in aluminum bottles and cans and used compostable palm leaf plates and bamboo flatware to eat dinner.
The Plastic Pollution Coalition is a global advocacy group that works to cultivate a world free of plastic pollution and its various degrading and detrimental impacts on our environment and ecosystems. Ball Corporation, a supplier of high-quality metal packaging for beverage, food and household products, is working to bring more awareness to the sustainability of aluminum. As most of us know, plastic is difficult to effectively recycle and only 9% of the plastic ever produced has been recycled. The majority of the plastic that we encounter in our everyday lives is single-use, which never ends up recycled, and instead ends up in a landfill somewhere - or worse, in our oceans and waterways. As such, plastic is incredibly damaging to the natural environment, and plastic pollution can prove fatal to both sea and land animals.
A virtual spring concert gave us a great opportunity to get together, enjoy some great music and support the Plastic Pollution Coalition. Set in Los Angeles, the Lot Sixteen team tuned in virtually from DC to listen to engaging testimonials from young advocates and environmentalists describing what efforts they have taken, along with the nonprofit work they’ve completed, to advance their goal of a world free of plastic pollution. In between different segments of the evening, a variety of powerful and prominent musicians performed songs for our enjoyment. Among the featured artists for the evening were Jackson Browne, Keb Mo and Mandy Moore.
Between the musical offerings of the concert, the yummy frozen margaritas and perhaps a little too much pizza (speaking for myself), May 23rd was a great evening to mark the beginning of summer and support a worthwhile cause.
